Film Festival Attendance Grows
The Beaufort Kaleidoscope: Film, Food and Fine Art concluded yesterday with smashing success! The film festival portion of the event saw dramatic increases in attendance in comparison to the previous year. Over the two days of screenings, 19 films in four categories of feature, documentary, student and short were shown. Over 1100 people attended the screenings at Lady’s Island Cinema, more than doubling the attendance of last year’s festival. The animation screenings also were a huge hit at the Arts Council of Beaufort County Performance Center on Boundary Street. This festival has a bright future with the opportunity to grow and evolve into something spectacular! Congratulations to all of the finalists and the winners of each category! We found this festival via an ad in Coastal Living magazine and bought the whole package. This community treated us like royalty. I have always loved South Carolina for its picturesque landscape, temperate climate and warm friendly people. The folks of Beaufort showed my wife and I something like I have never encountered in the 38 years I have been visiting the Palmetto State. The films were outstanding, kudos to the people who put them together. The special events, the art walk and the restaurants were magnificent. We were introduced to the mayor, everyone on the chamber, many of the gallery owners and we got to sit in on a discussion with author John Villani (The 100 Best Art Towns in America). We also got to talk to several of the film makers. We attended two Methodist services on Sunday morning and were greeted with the same hospitality.
If you love films, food, art and the warmth and kindness so reminiscent of small town America, then Kaleidoscope needs to be added to your list of “must dos”.
The winner of best feature film was The Flyboys (listed as Sky Kids on imdb.com). Make sure to take your family to see it if you get the chance. It is a great, clean, wholesome adventure that keeps you on the edge of your seat for the full two hours. It is making the Independent Film Festival circuit because Hollywood seems to think most of America doesn’t want to pay to see good, clean movies so this one wasn’t picked up by tinsel town.
Let me close with Best Wishes and Love to all our new friends in Beaufort.
